On Saturday, August 9, 2025, Juliet W. Long Elementary (JWL) was filled with joy, hard work, and plenty of sweat as parents, students, staff, and community members joined forces for a full-day playground build. From 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., volunteers measured, assembled, hauled, and cleaned—turning plans on paper into a vibrant new play space.
The GFS/JWL PTO was instrumental in both fundraising for the project and organizing the effort, which has been more than two years in the making. Principal Mark Westkott provided steady leadership throughout the entire process—from the initial concept and planning stages to coordinating volunteers and keeping momentum high on build day.
Behind the scenes, the Ledyard Public Schools District Facilities Team played a critical role, preparing the site in advance and supporting the build with equipment and expertise.
The result is more than just a playground—it’s a testament to years of commitment, community spirit, and pride. Students will return to school knowing their families, educators, and neighbors built a place for them to play, connect, and grow.
Final inspection, touch-ups, and installation of the rubberized play surface will be completed this week, with details on a ribbon-cutting and official opening to follow.
